YOUNG WRITERS STORY COMPETITION 2018

Friends of the Barossa Library is conducting a Story Writing Competition for Young Writers in the Barossa Region.

Entries are invited in four age-based Divisions:

1. Up to 8 years: up to 200 words
2. 9 to 12 years: up to 500 words
3. 13 to 15 years: up to 700 words
4. 16 to 20 years: up to 1000 words.

RULES:

1. 1. Entrants are invited to compose a work of fiction on the theme “Find Your Treasure”.  The “treasure” may be physical or metaphorical, that is, anything which is of great value to the author or the characters in the story.
   2. The competition is open to any resident of the Barossa region who is of the ages specified
   3. Entries should be in the form of a fictional story on the subject, “Find Your Treasure”.
   4. Entries may be hand-written or typed or computer-processed.
   5. Entries will be judged on the basis of imagination, clarity of expression, grammar appropriate to the age group and presentation.  The judges’ decisions will be final.
   6. Entries may be illustrated, but this will not be a criterion for judging.
   7. All entries must be clearly marked with the name and contact details of the author, and, if appropriate, the school at which the author is enrolled
   8. It is hoped to display the winning entries in a bound form at the Nuriootpa Library.  Entrants are requested to sign a form of release for the public display of the works, to be signed by the appropriate parent or guardian, if the author is a minor.
   9. Prizes will be awarded for first, second and third places.
   10. At the discretion of the judges, prizes may be awarded for outstanding poetry entries.
   11. A Certificate of Participation will be awarded to all entrants.
   12. Prizes, in the form of book vouchers, will be awarded to schools which, in the opinion of the judges, have done most to encourage participation by Young Writers enrolled at that school.

• Entries may be submitted to any branch of the Barossa Library from 30^th April, 2018 and close on Tuesday 16^th October, 2018 at 5.00pm.  The names of winners will be announced at a public ceremony and published in the local press.

Our Young Writers’ Competition 2018 has been launched and entry forms are now available at schools and libraries throughout the region.  Some great prizes in four age divisions, thanks to sponsors the Co-Op, Ravens Parlour Book Store, and Rockford Wines, plus the Barossa Library Service is offering $200 worth of books to the library of the school that does the most to encourage its pupils to enter the competition. 

So get the young people thinking and writing and using their imaginations.

Excellent response to the 2016 Young Writers’ Competition with 162 entries and a very difficult task for the judges, as so many of them were very good indeed.

Congratulations to Alice Shore of Springton who was the winner of the Kangaroo Island Raffle drawn last week.  Alice wins a ferry trip for 2 to beautiful Kangaroo Island, accommodation, entry to a number of attractions and some meals.  A great prize!  Many thanks to all who supported the library by buying tickets and thanks to Sealink for the most generous donation of the prize.

Our mid-year fundraiser, a “Winter in July” Raffle, is now on sale.  The prize is an excellent hampers of all kinds of goodies (including a Lions Christmas cake!) and featuring an exquisite quilt, handmade by Helen de Garis,

Tickets are just $2 each or 3 for $5 at any library branch.  Drawn end of July and winner notified by telephone.  All proceeds to library improvements.

The Friends of the Barossa Library has launched the 2016 Young Writers’ Competition with some great prizes donated by the Co-Op and Vinpac.  There are four age divisions:  0 to 8 years (up to 200 words), 9-12 years (up to 500 words), 13-15 years (up to 700 words), and 16 to 20 years (up to 1,000 words).  Entry forms and details available from any Barossa School or any branch of the Barossa Library.  Entries close on September 16th (end of 3rd term).

Book soon – tickets selling fast

The  Barossa Public Library is hosting bestselling writer and journalist Peter FitzSimons on Wednesday 18 November to launch his new book Fromelles & Pozieres: in the trenches of hell.

He is the author of over twenty-seven books, including Tobruk, Kokoda, Gallipoli, Batavia, Eureka, Ned Kelly and biographies of Douglas Mawson, Nancy Wake‚ Steve Waugh.

On 20th August we held a very successful Annual General Meeting, where members heard reports from the President and Treasurer and the Library Services Manager on our work during the past year.  Congratulations to the new Committee:  President Bill Biscoe, Vice-President Jill Stevens, Treasurer and Membership Secretary Claire Hein, Committee James Porter, Margaret Seager, Kevin Platt, Christine Malone, Jennifer Kerr, Paddy Carter, Kirsten Harvey and Michele Hoffman.

No volunteers for Secretary at this stage, so Bill Biscoe will be doing the minutes at this stage.

Great guest speaker Bruce Munday – his book “Those Dry Stone Walls” is a fascinating account of the stone walls found throughout South Australia and particularly the Barossa.  Bruce is an excellent speaker and is generous with giving his time to community organisations such as the Friends of the Barossa Library.
